1.1 Freshmen's Application for Residence Permit

 (1) Freshmen are required to enter China with a Chinese X1 or X2 visa and arrive in the Nanjing city as soon as possible. The application for temporary residence should be made at the local police station within 24 hours after arrival in Nanjing or through “南京公安微警务” Wechat platform. Failure to make the above application as required will result in Administrative Punishment according to Chinese laws.


 (2) Freshmen are required to perform the Physical Health Examination at Jiangsu International Travel Healthcare Center after registration at College of International Education. Procedures for residence permit will be handled in a way of unified processing for those freshmen who qualify the Physical Health Examination. For those who could not qualify the examination, they will have to leave China immediately and bear all the costs for returning back by themselves.   

 (3) Required documents for the application include:

    A valid passport (verification of original copy; copy of passport identification page, Chinese visa page and entry seal page to be submitted)/Original copy of JW202/Original copy of the University’s Admission Notice/A 2-inch photograph (bare-head, full face, against a white background, within the last 6 months)/Original copy of Physical Health Examination results/Original copy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence issued by the local police station.

 Note: Chinese names will be needed prior to fill-out of application for residence permit.

 (4) University will organize for going to Exit-Entry Administration Department of Nanjing Public Security Bureau in order to apply for residence permit.


1.2 Non-freshmen's Application for Residence Permit

 (1) When there is a change of residence, the student should immediately apply for the Registration Form of Temporary Residence at the local police station with his/her passport and the Lease Agreement (for students who live off campus only) or through “南京公安微警务Wechat platform.

 (2) The student is required to take his/her passport and the original copy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence to the International Students’ Affairs Office 30 days before the expiry date of current residence permit. Meanwhile, Declaration for Processing Application for Visa of NUAA can be obtained.

 (3) The above-mentioned documents shall be taken by students themselves to Exit-Entry Administration Department of Nanjing Public Security Bureau or Jiangning Administrative Service Center if they need to extend residence permit.

 (4) Required documents for the application include:

    Visa Application Form (to be collected at the Visa Office)/Original and photocopies of passport/Copies of the visa page/Declaration for Processing Application for Visa of NUAA/Original copy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence/Students’ Attendance Record Proof

 (5) International students are required to claim their passports at the Exit-Entry Administration Department of Nanjing Public Security Bureau on the day specified in the Notice of Claim. Students shall be responsible for any consequences that may arise from claims made after the specified date.

1.3 Instructions for Application for Temporary Residence

 (1) An application for temporary residence should be made upon each entry.

 (2) An application for temporary residence should be made whenever residence is changed.

 (3) An application for temporary residence should be made whenever there is a change in the student’s profile. Profile information includes a student’s English name, nationality, passport number, passport type, and so on.

 (4) The application form for temporary residence can be obtained from the reception desk when an international students checks into a hotel.

 (5) The application form for temporary residence should be handed in together with the student’s valid passport and the Lease Agreement (the latter is not required if the student stays in a hotel).

 (6) The application form for temporary residence should be made within 24 hours after check-in or move-in. Failure to make timely applications will result in an Administrative Punishment (reprimand or fine), which will affect subsequent visa application and re-entry.

 (7) Those who live on campus can obtain Proof of On-campus Accommodation at the International Students’ Affairs Office of NUAA.

 (8) International students who live off campus are required to make the application for temporary residence at the local police station with passport and the Lease Agreement.

 (9) International students who intend to live off campus are required to handle necessary procedures for temporary residence at Jiangning Development Zone Police Station (for students in Jiangjunlu Campus) and Ruijinlu Police Station (for students in Minggugong Campus).

1.4 Notes on Application for Residence Permit Extension

 (1) International students are required to apply for residence permit extension 30 days before the expiry date of the current one.

 (2) If the passport and the residence permit expire about the same time, the holder should apply to the embassy for a new passport 6 months before it expires. In this case, the application for residence permit extension can only be made with the new passport.

 (3) The Period of Validity should not be longer than the student’s length of study in the university.

 (4) If an international student with valid residence permit has applied for a new passport, he/she should revise his/her profile information at the International Students’ Affairs Office of NUAA within 10 days after the issue of the new passport.

 (5) A student with an expired visa or residence permit has to pay a fine (with required documents) at the Exit-Entry Administration Department of Nanjing Public Security Bureau before he/she can make the application for visa extension or residence permit extension.

 (6) Without permission from authorities of the Chinese government, students with X1/X2 visa are not allowed to seek for employment.

 (7) The Exit-Entry Administration Department of Nanjing Public Security Bureau makes a final decision on the Period of Validity of a student visa or residence permit.

 (8) Application for residence permit extension will be declined if any of the following occurs:

    a. Failure to pay off tuition and dormitory fees;

 b. Failure to submit Registration Form of Temporary Residence or to apply for temporary residence to the International Students’ Affairs Office of NUAA;

    c. Poor academic performances or too much absence from classes;

    d. Violation of Chinese laws or school regulations;

 e. Other circumstances not conforming to residence permit extension conditions.

 (9) Cancelation of Student Visa or Residence Permit

    In cases of suspension, stopping or resuming of schooling, the current student visa or residence permit shall be canceled.
